From the author of Slow Foreplay On a Fast Bus comes All The Heart's Fault.
There is a knock on the door.
It is the silence of the night.
You come awake slowly.
The knock won't go away.
You realize it is time again.
Death is at the door once more.
Also by the same author, The Killing of Train-Man Brown and Send Me a Friend and many, many more short stories.
All the Heart Fault (Audible Audio Edition) Will Bevis Lynn Benson Books
The dog barked because someone was ringing the doorbell in the middle of the night. When the man answered the door, the policeman told him that his phone must be turned off because someone was trying to reach him and had finally asked the police to give him their number so he could call them.It was time again. Time to say goodbye to a parent. Time to sit in a waiting room and wait for Death. He wasn't ready. Not now. Not yet. Maybe not ever, but at least not tonight.
But tonight was the night the bell rang, and the man had to drive to the hospital. Tonight was the night he had to go to his Mom's side. Tonight was the night he had to look Death in the eye. Again.
I have been there. Twice. Like the author, first I lost my dad and then my mom. But fortunately my parents were not in a hospital so visits were not limited. I was with Dad when he died, and that was the greatest honor of my life.
This is a good story because it will make you stop and think (or perhaps remember) about the inevitable event you will have to face one day. Some of you have never thought about this, and you really need to prepare for it. It was definitely hard to lose my parents, but having discussed this with them months before, my siblings and I knew their final wishes. We also knew they were both ready to go which made it so much easier for us to let them go.
Use this book as a conversation starter. Talk to your spouse, your parents and siblings. Do not be afraid of the inevitable. Be prepared for it. That way you can have a great deal of peace when that time is finally here.
